The Secret to Writing

I write a lot. I write a weekly blog, books (my 6th in the works), articles for the media, and as a company we write and message for our clients. The number one question I get asked is: where do you find the time for writing?

In my experience, finding time to do whatever you want to do whether it is working out, finishing a project at the office, or writing, requires scheduling. It’s not having the time; it’s creating a system for finding and making the time.

When I wrote the book, The Connectors, I was on a tight 4 month deadline from my publisher. I needed to write regularly in order to meet the deadline. It seemed almost an impossible task when I began thinking about finding time to complete this book. I felt I couldn’t take time away from my already busy life filled with 2 active kids, a husband, friends, family, a very full and demanding work schedule, etc. But I had committed to writing the book and really wanted this book published, so I had to find the time. And, it forced me to change my schedule permanently.

I began getting up at 4am every day (and still do it today). In my desperation to find the time to write, it seemed the only time not occupied (except by the notion of sleep). And, it turned out to be the perfect time to write.  For 2 hours every day it was and is my most productive and sometimes only quiet time of the day.

Now I agree that this may not be the right scenario for everyone. It is my system and works for me. But there has to be a system, out of desperation, that you implement. Blocking time for me was the only way to make time.

But what if you don’t like to write yet you still have to (or would like to) output blog entries, content for your email newsletter, and maybe even write a book. There are services and people that can help! There are ghostwriters who take your ideas and put them in the form of eloquent writing.  One of the best resources for developing content is something called www.Constant-Content.com. Starting at $30, you can get a pre-written article on a host of topics. If you look hard enough, there is always a solution for developing content – you just have to find it!
